Alanna & Ryan’s Modern Garden Architecture, Calgary Commons Wedding

November 9, 2018

Alanna and Ryan met at National on 10th in November of 2014. They were actually set up by a mutual friend who decided to introduced her as ‘Claudia,’ you know just in case she wasn’t interested haha. This friend of theirs actually has run quite the record of match-making and sure enough, they had a connection. Ryan is an Architect and Alanna is an Interior Designer so they hit it off already based on interests and effortlessly talked the night away. 4 days later, Ryan decided to text her. He was living in Lacombe at the time so they mostly talked over text messaging until Alanna asked him out for their first official date on New Year’s day in 2015. Because of distance, their relationship took its time, they really built a strong foundation of friendship until May of 2015 when they made it official.

In the summer Ryan ended up moving to Calgary and they started living together and jetting off to new and interesting places to witness culture, food, design, and architecture. They went to Montreal as their first trip together, followed by the States, Geneva, and Monaco.

In December of 2017, they decided to take a last minute trip to Montreal over a weekend. Alanna really wanted to see the Westmount Conservatory but unfortunately, it was closed due to a crazy snowstorm that closed a lot of places down. Little did Alanna know that Ryan had his heart set on proposing there to her. So the next day they went to go see the Bio Dome, Alanna loves gardens and conservatories in general so Ryan knew it would be the perfect backdrop. He practiced a 1-minute speech and the friends they had been visiting in Montreal were in on it and gave them the space he needed to ask, “Will you be my best friend forever?” Alanna instantly cried, she didn’t even hear his 1-minute speech, all she could say was ‘yes, yes, yes.’

That brings us to just two weeks ago. Alanna & Ryan got married at the beautiful Hemmingway Room at the Calgary Commons. Alanna even managed to get her giant Fiddle Leaf Fig tree there from her home to be part of the room’s ambience; a mixture of modern lines, boho flair, and sophistication. The room was filled with plants, gorgeous natural light, and her own calligraphy work which is incredible.

Alanna is lively, thoughtful, and has a huge love for snail mail and pretty things in general. She is also loyal and surrounded by a tribe of babes she affectionately calls them her “barbs.” I didn’t even need a styling kit for her flat lays as she had everything, she is on top of it all!! Ryan is calm, steady, open-minded, and sentimental which I think shows because his proposal had such symmetry: he proposed in the first city they ever traveled to only 3 years later after they had met.

It was beautiful and the food was amazing. Oh, and fresh margaritas, need I say more? I love that even in all its beauty, the Mexican food added such a fun flair and true personality to who they are instead of the traditional meal you see at weddings. It really felt like they were treating everyone to some of their favourite things and it was amazing.

Congratulations A + R!!! Double date to Anejo at anytime for Margaritas and Tacos! I am so grateful I got to capture your day and so glad Alanna that you braved the giant stones IN HEELS by the river to be photographed by the centre street bridge. All of it was just stunning and so special.
